Symbol Relations
The Symbol Relations cognitive function is arguably one of the most important which is why we often refer to it as an executive function. An excellent example is that of Barbara Arrowsmith-Young and her own childhood learning difficulties documented in her best-selling book “The Woman Who Her Changed Her Brain”. It was only once Barbara had successfully strengthened the Symbol Relations cognitive function that she was able to make sense of the world. This transformed her ability to make logical connections and join the dots, which ultimately enabled her work to benefit thousands of students worldwide.
Symbol Relations is the cognitive function responsible for logical reasoning; making connections between seemingly unrelated things. Realizing that a+b=c. So if you’re a child in school growing up and trying to make sense of education and the world around you with a Symbol Relations dysfunction, then it’s no surprise that you are probably going to struggle. By strengthening the area of the brain responsible for logical reasoning, students improve their understanding and performance across the board in academic subjects. Importantly, their ability to understand everyday life also improves and they successfully interact with the people around them.
So how are we able to dramatically improve an underperforming Symbol Relations function?
Well, if we consider the question logically (pun intended) then it makes sense to first isolate, and then target this function directly with the appropriate stimulus for growth. To give a simple example: it’s like going to the gym and working on an exercise designed specifically to strengthen your biceps. Knowing how to isolate and target specific areas of the brain and exactly what stimulus is required for growth goes back to the initial learning profile as determined by individual assessment. This is the formula of the Arrowsmith Program and has taken Barbara Arrowsmith-Young most of her life to investigate, implement and refine. The fact that we are able to employ the program at CEC to the benefit of our students remains our privilege and a task we are most delighted to undertake.
Remarkably, the symbol relations cognitive function is also unique in that we have successfully utilized stimulation of this function to provide what we describe as Cognitive Enhancement or a cognitive edge for students who do not have a learning difficulty. Let’s face it, it’s not just kids with learning difficulties who can benefit from strengthening their ability to reason logically, accurately, more efficiently, repeatedly and within strict time constraints.
In fact, it’s been my privilege to personally work with successful executives, entrepreneurs, athletes, musicians, and artists who either had an area of their work or personal life they believed had always underperformed, or who were looking for an advantage over the competition. For this reason, CEC is pleased to provide a specially designed Cognitive Enhancement program for adults or children who would also like to gain such an edge.
Here’s what one Arrowsmith Parent from Australia had to say after I had worked with her two daughters on an intensive course of Symbol Relations exercises:
Hi Hugo,
Just wanted to send you a quick update and say how thrilled we are with the program! Our (two girls) are both very different from a few months ago. K just got 2nd in her Maths class with 92% in an exam and has had some other good results. The biggest change in her is her confidence and happiness. She hasn’t missed a day of school and goes off very willingly which wasn’t the case before.
We had tantrums, tears, and a very troubled little girl curled up in a dressing gown questioning herself. A teacher at the school didn’t know what we had done overseas and said she has seen K around the school grounds and looks so confident. She is also accepting our help with her school work which she wouldn’t do before.
Z is amazing, so beautiful and patient. She was quite frustrated, snappy and stressed before the program and now she is studying hard and finding she can actually remember her notes. She is so excited and was actually looking forward to these exams that she is now half way through. She finds her memory is amazing and she has actually finished every exam with 10 minutes to spare to check over her work. Before Arrowsmith she couldn’t even get halfway through her exam. She also couldn’t get all the data off the board in a lesson and would take friends notes home to copy and catch up. First day back to school and she was the first to copy the notes down and answer the teachers questions. Classmates asked to take her notes home so they could catch up!! We are so happy to give our girls this opportunity and now would like to bring the other 3 over to do it too.
If you or anyone you know could benefit from this kind of life changing experience, please don’t hesitate to contact us via our website or by phone. It will be our pleasure to arrange a meeting to discuss the possibilities.
Until next month wishing you and your families all the best,
Hugo Moore

You can also take our Cognitive Profile Questionnaire to help determine if you or your child's learning difficulties are typical of those addressed by the Arrowsmith Program.
